How the Internet of Things 2020 could help you

"The Internet of Things" or "IoT" (The Internet of Things) is an expression that you may have read or heard in relation to our increasingly connected world. But what does that mean exactly?

In the broad sense, the Internet of Things or IoT refers to everyday objects that communicate with you as well as other devices over the Internet.

No, your desk lamp is not going to begin to comment on the most beautiful goals of the match of the day before. It is rather your refrigerator that could warn you that you are missing eggs and milk and that you should take it because you are close to the supermarket. Pretty nice, no? It's certain ! Let's discover what the Internet of Things brings us and what it can bring us in the future.

If you've never heard of IoT, you probably know the term "connected homes". It is essentially the same concept as IoT, but the term "Internet of Things" covers a greater number of uses: in companies, for our clothes, our pets, etc.

By using the right technology, you can use your smartphone to communicate with connected thermostats that trigger the ideal temperature for your return home. This saves you from unnecessarily heating the house or leaving it too cool when you're away while saving money.

Also, try to imagine how these devices could make your life even simpler:

Connected scales that work with your treadmill, sending menu ideas to your laptop or smartphone can help you stay healthy.

Security and control devices in your home give you the ability, for example, to automatically turn on and turn off the lights in the entrance and exit rooms and to monitor your home via streaming video while you are away.

Beware that you are in the area, your favourite restaurants prepare your favourite dish and take a reservation without even having to call them.

Pure science fiction of the 50s? But no, it's real. The technology needed to implement all of this is already there. Smaller and smarter, mobile devices are offering more features and communicating via the Internet until all your everyday objects, from your toothbrush to your toaster, are connected.

Our (near) future gadgets will all have a role in the house and will be able to communicate with each other and collaborate to serve you better.

Hijacking connected objects: Keeping it safe with IoT devices

You are not alone in thinking that this tech recipe could fall into the wrong hands. As with any technology, there are good and bad uses. And we do not doubt that hackers will use new technologies to recover PINs, credit card numbers, etc. This is happening for the moment on the Web and it is therefore essential to put in place reliable security devices.

Without Internet and ATMs, we would still have to sacrifice our lunch break to queue at the bank. Who would want to return to this time? (There are not too many volunteers, it seems ...)

Would it be possible for unscrupulous individuals to hack into Internet of Things security cameras and spy on each of your moves? Yes, without the proper security. What if they wanted to take control of your future television, your smoke detectors ... and even your coffee machine? They could do it without problem. It is enough that they are connected.

As we enter the era of connected everything, where our daily life will be managed via the Internet, from our dogs to the watering of flowers, we must absolutely make every effort to ensure that these connections are reliable and secure and continue to close the door to cyber criminals.

Norton products help you secure all your devices with ease. All your devices are protected against online and other threats: PC, Mac® and iPhone®, iPad® and Android ™ devices. Protect up to 5 devices with a single solution.
